What is a good Instagram engagement rate for Indian accounts?
Published 7 October 2026 · 1 min read
Use our engagement rate calculator to get your number, then compare it with the rough ranges below. They are rules of thumb that many marketers use, not official Instagram figures, and different tools calculate engagement slightly differently.
How it is calculated
The simplest method: add the average likes and comments on your recent posts, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. A page with 10,000 followers that averages 350 likes and 50 comments has a rate of 4%. Some tools also count saves and shares, or divide by reach instead of followers, so always compare like with like.
Rough benchmarks by account size
| Followers | Typical engagement rate |
|---|---|
| Under 5,000 | 3% to 8% |
| 5,000 to 50,000 | 2% to 5% |
| 50,000 to 500,000 | 1% to 3% |
| Above 500,000 | 0.5% to 2% |
Why small accounts score higher
Smaller audiences tend to be closer to the creator: friends, customers, people from the same city. A larger share of them engages. As an audience grows, more people follow passively and the rate falls.
What brands do with the number
Brands compare your rate against creators of similar size and niche, and they look at the quality of comments too. A page with thousands of followers, a few likes and generic comments stands out badly. Keep followers, likes and comments in believable proportion; see our guide to likes per post.
