How to write Instagram captions that get replies and saves
Published 10 October 2026 · 1 min read
Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first line or two show before “more”. That makes the opening line the most important sentence you write. Check your length with the caption counter as you go.
The formula
- Hook: something that makes people tap “more”.
- Value: the tip, story or detail.
- Call to action: a small, specific ask.
Hooks that work
- A specific result: “I wasted ₹8,000 on a camera before learning this.”
- A question: “Would you pay ₹499 for this?”
- A mistake: “Stop doing this with your reel covers.”
- A promise: “Three free tools I use every day to edit.”
Calls to action people actually answer
- “Save this before your next shoot.”
- “Tell me your city and I will share the best café in it.”
- “Comment 1 for the checklist, 2 for the template.”
- “Which one would you pick?”
Language and tone
Write in the language your audience uses. Hinglish works well for many Indian audiences if it comes naturally to you; forced slang does not. Keep sentences short and use line breaks so the caption is easy to read on a phone.
Structure for longer captions
- Use short paragraphs of one to two lines.
- Number your tips so people can scan them.
- Put hashtags at the end, or in the first comment.
Avoid
- Long blocks of text without breaks.
- Begging for likes in every caption.
- Burying the point under three paragraphs of introduction.
