Best Instagram reel length: 7, 15, 30 or 90 seconds?
Published 10 October 2026 · 1 min read
The best reel length is the shortest one that delivers your point. What Instagram cares about is how much of the reel people watch, so a 12-second reel watched to the end beats a 60-second reel abandoned halfway. Here is how to choose a length for the kind of content you make.
| Length | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 7–15 seconds | Jokes, transitions, product reveals, loops | Too short to teach anything |
| 15–30 seconds | Quick tips, recipes, outfit ideas, before-afters | Padding in the middle |
| 30–60 seconds | Step-by-step tutorials, stories, comparisons | Needs a reason to stay |
| 60–90 seconds | Deeper explainers when retention is already strong | Big drop-offs after 20 seconds |
Rules that help
- Trim until every second earns its place. Remove “ummm”, intros and silent gaps.
- If a reel is longer than 30 seconds, add a reason to stay: a countdown, a reveal at the end, a list of numbered tips.
- Loops, where the end flows into the start, encourage replays and improve watch time.
- Match the length to the idea. A single tip does not need 60 seconds.
Test it yourself
Post three reels of different lengths on the same topic over a week. Open Insights and compare average watch time and the percentage watched. Your own audience’s answer beats any rule.

If most people leave in the first three seconds, fix the hook, not the length. If they leave at the halfway point, cut the middle. Our guide to making reels that travel covers hooks in detail.
