How to increase your Instagram engagement rate
Published 24 September 2026 · 2 min read
Engagement rate is the share of your followers who like, comment, save or share. It is the number brands check first. You can calculate yours with our engagement rate calculator, then use these eight habits to raise it.
1. Write captions that ask for something small
End with a question that is easy to answer: “Which one would you pick, 1 or 2?” Low-effort questions get replies. Questions that need an essay get silence.
2. Make posts worth saving
Checklists, price lists, recipes, study notes and “things I wish I knew” posts get saved. Saves tell Instagram a post is useful, and they are counted as a strong signal.
3. Reply fast
Answer comments in the first hour. It keeps the conversation going and encourages others to join in. Try replying with a question of your own.
4. Post less, better
If you post daily but most posts fall flat, your average drops. Fewer, stronger posts can raise the rate even while your follower count stays the same.
5. Remove dead weight
A huge follower count with few active people lowers your rate. A smaller audience that cares is worth more than a larger one that scrolls past. Do not chase follow-for-follow groups.
6. Use stories for light interaction
Polls, quizzes and question stickers keep your audience in the habit of tapping. People who tap in stories are more likely to engage with posts later.
7. Keep your numbers proportionate
If you add followers or likes, keep them in a believable ratio so the rate stays sensible. Likes on your best posts can make them look more popular; our Instagram likes page lists the options. Do not let followers race far ahead of likes, or your rate will look weak to a brand.
8. Be patient and track weekly
Engagement improves slowly as your audience gets to know you. Check your numbers once a week, not once an hour, and change one thing at a time.
What to avoid
- Engagement pods and comment-for-comment groups.
- Asking for likes in every caption.
- Comparing yourself with accounts ten times your size.
