Spotify plays for independent Indian artists: what helps and what does not
Published 25 September 2026 · 1 min read
Spotify counts a stream after a track has played for about 30 seconds. Plays alone do not make a hit, but the numbers influence how listeners and playlist curators see you, which is why independent artists care about them.
How the numbers work
- Plays: total streams of a track.
- Monthly listeners: unique listeners in the last 28 days.
- Followers: people who chose to follow your profile.
- Saves: listeners who added the track to their library, a strong signal.
What helps real growth
- Pitch your release through Spotify for Artists at least a week before release.
- Get added to independent playlists run by real curators.
- Post short clips on Reels and Shorts around release day.
- Ask real listeners to save and add to playlists.
Where plays fit in
Some artists add plays to a new release so a track does not look unheard when a curator or listener lands on it. See Spotify plays options. Keep numbers in a believable ratio with your listeners and saves.
Be careful with big promises
No service can promise playlist placement or guaranteed royalties. Be sceptical of anyone who does. Spotify also takes action against artificial streaming, so go slowly and use real promotion alongside.
Track your release
Use Spotify for Artists to watch listeners by country, saves and playlist adds in the first two weeks.
