Instagram link in bio: what to put there and how to track clicks
Published 8 October 2026 · 1 min read
Your bio link is the only clickable link on your profile, so it should do one job well. Most people waste it on a homepage nobody visits from a phone. Here is how to choose what goes there and measure whether it works.
Pick one goal
- Shop: link straight to your catalogue or a WhatsApp chat with a ready message.
- Coach or service: link to a booking page or a short enquiry form.
- Creator: link to your latest video, a newsletter or a page with your top three links.
- Local business: link to Google Maps or the contact page with hours.
Make the WhatsApp link work harder
In India many orders happen on WhatsApp. A link in the form https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%20I%20want%20to%20order opens a chat with your message already typed, so the customer only taps send. Use your business number and change the text to match the offer you are promoting.
Link-in-bio pages: when they help
A simple page with three to five buttons is useful when you have several things to offer. Keep it fast and mobile-first, put the most important button first and remove anything you do not want clicked.
Track what works
Add UTM tags so your analytics shows which post or story brought visitors. For example ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=diwali-sale. Use our UTM link builder to create tagged links in a few seconds, and create a separate tagged link for each campaign.
Keep it fresh
- Change the link when you launch something new.
- Say so in your latest story and reel: “link in bio”.
- Check once a month whether the link still works.
- Shorten long URLs so the bio looks clean.
Common mistakes
- Linking to a homepage with no clear next step.
- Pointing to a page that loads slowly on mobile data.
- Never checking whether anyone clicks.
