Instagram hashtags: how many to use and which ones
Published 29 September 2026 · 1 min read
Hashtags are a categorising tool. They do not make a weak post go viral, but the right ones help the right people find a good one, especially for small accounts that have no other way to be discovered.
How many should you use?
Instagram allows up to 30, but most creators do better with a small, relevant set of 3 to 8. A long block of unrelated tags looks spammy and adds nothing. Use our caption counter to check your count.
Mix sizes
| Tag size | Posts using it | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Niche | Thousands | Easier to appear in; attracts the right audience |
| Mid | Tens of thousands | A balance of reach and competition |
| Broad | Millions | Useful for context, hard to rank in |
Add local tags
For businesses, city and area tags are valuable: #MumbaiFoodie, #DelhiWeddingPhotographer, #BangaloreStartups, #PuneCafes. Local audiences convert better than global ones, and fewer people compete for them.
Build a tag bank
- Search your main topic on Instagram and note related tags.
- Check how many posts each has and how recent the top posts are.
- Group your tags into three or four themed sets.
- Rotate sets across posts instead of pasting the same block.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying the same 30 tags on every post.
- Using banned or spammy tags that can limit a post’s distribution.
- Tags unrelated to the post just because they are popular.
- Putting tags in the middle of the caption where they break reading.
Check what works
Open Insights on a post and look at impressions “from hashtags”. Keep the tags that bring reach and drop the ones that do not. Review every month.
