The Instagram algorithm explained simply for Indian creators
Published 22 September 2026 · 2 min read
There is not one Instagram algorithm. There are separate ranking systems for the feed, reels, stories and Explore. They look at similar things, though, and you can work with them without any tricks.
What Instagram looks at
- Watch time and completion. Did people watch the reel to the end? Did they replay it? This is the strongest signal for reels.
- Shares and saves. Sending a reel to a friend says more than a like. Saving a post says it is useful.
- Relationship. People see more from accounts they interact with: replies, DMs, profile visits.
- Topic. Captions, on-screen text, hashtags and audio help Instagram understand what a reel is about and who might like it.
- Recency and activity. Fresh posts and active accounts get a better chance.
How the feed, reels and Explore differ
| Surface | Who sees it | What matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Mostly followers | Relationship, recency, interaction |
| Reels | Followers and non-followers | Watch time, replays, shares |
| Stories | Close followers first | Replies, taps and sticker use |
| Explore | People who do not follow you | Topic match, early engagement |
What this means for your content
- Open with the most interesting second of the video, not a logo or a greeting.
- Make something people want to send to a friend: a useful tip, a relatable joke, a local recommendation.
- Answer comments in the first hour. Early conversation tells Instagram the post is lively.
- Post consistently so your audience gets used to seeing you.
- Use on-screen text to reinforce the topic.
What matters less than people say
Hashtags help a little for categorising, but a post with thirty hashtags does not beat a post with a strong hook. Posting at a “magic time” matters less than posting when your own audience is online; check Insights for that. Deleting and reposting a reel does not reset anything useful.
Where numbers fit in
Social proof (followers, likes, views) affects how people react once they see your content, which in turn affects the signals the algorithm reads. That is why some creators add a small base of numbers. It is a supporting tool; the algorithm still rewards content people actually watch and share. Read why saves and shares matter for a deeper look at the strongest signals.

Does posting more often help?
Only if quality holds. Four strong reels a week usually beat fourteen weak ones.
Do I need trending audio?
It can help when it fits your content, but a good hook and clear topic matter more.
