How to audit your Instagram followers for fake or inactive accounts

Published 3 October 2026 · 1 min read

Before a brand or client checks your account, it helps to know what your own audience looks like. You do not need a paid tool: five checks inside Instagram tell you most of what matters.

Five quick checks

  1. Sample the list. Open your followers and scroll through fifty. Count obvious empties: no profile picture, no posts, random strings of digits in the name, or hundreds of accounts followed with no followers.
  2. Compare reach to followers. If your reels reach well under 5% of your follower count, many followers are likely inactive. Use the reel reach ratio calculator.
  3. Check Insights locations. A mismatch with your real audience, such as a Kolkata cafe with followers from five other continents, is a flag.
  4. Look at story views. Real followers watch stories; if fewer than one in fifty do, the base is weak.
  5. Compare likes to followers. Under about 1% on a normal post is low and worth investigating.

What to do if the ratio is bad

  • Remove obvious spam accounts one by one if you want a cleaner list.
  • Raise real engagement with replies, polls and local content.
  • Avoid adding large amounts of low-quality followers on top.
  • Put effort into saves and shares, which low-quality followers never produce.
