Why Instagram followers drop (and what to do about it)
Published 26 September 2026 · 2 min read
You wake up and your follower count is lower than yesterday. It can feel alarming, but drops are normal on every account, and the cause is usually one of a handful of things. Understanding which one tells you whether to worry.
1. Platform clean-ups
Instagram periodically removes spam, bot and inactive accounts. Every account on the platform can lose followers when that happens, including ones that never bought anything. A sudden drop of a few percent across many accounts on the same day is usually this.
2. Real unfollows
People unfollow when your content changes, when you post too often, or when a giveaway ends. Follow-for-follow audiences are the fastest to leave. Normal churn on an active account is a small percentage every month.
3. Followers that came from a service
Some bought accounts are removed by the platform over time. The amount depends on the quality of the service: cheap, low-quality accounts drop more. That is what “drop”, “low drop” and “non drop” in service names refer to.
4. Deactivated and restricted accounts
When a person deactivates their account, they disappear from your count until they return. Accounts restricted by Instagram disappear too.
What normal looks like
| Drop in a month | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| 1% to 3% | Normal churn |
| 5% to 15% | Platform clean-up or some low-quality followers |
| 20%+ | Low-quality batch or a larger clean-up. Check your service’s refill terms |
What you can do
- If you bought followers, choose a service with a refill period and request a top-up from your order page if the count falls.
- Keep a proportionate number so a clean-up does not wreck your ratios.
- Concentrate on content that real people follow and share.
- Do not buy more immediately after a drop; wait a day or two and check what is stable.
Refill services are listed on our Instagram followers with refill page. If you are reading this because it just happened, follow the checklist in what to do if followers dropped.
