How to read Instagram Insights (in plain language)
Published 7 October 2026 · 1 min read
Instagram Insights is free, and it tells you more than most paid tools. The trouble is that it shows dozens of numbers. These are the ones that actually help you decide what to post next.
Where to find it
You need a professional account (creator or business, both free). Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard, or open Insights from the menu.
The overview: accounts reached
- Accounts reached: unique people who saw your content in the period.
- Followers vs non-followers: shows how much discovery you get. A high non-follower share means reels are travelling.
- Content type: which format drives your reach: reels, posts or stories.
Per-post numbers that matter
- Saves and shares: the strongest signals of value.
- Watch time and average watch time (reels): tells you if people stay.
- Follows from this post: your best content for growth.
- Reach from non-followers: how well it travelled.
Audience
- Top locations: check they match your market. A Jaipur boutique should see Rajasthan near the top.
- Age and gender: useful for deciding tone and topics.
- Most active times: use for scheduling.
A five-minute weekly review
- Open the last seven days.
- Sort posts by reach, then by saves.
- Note the top two and bottom two.
- Ask what the top two have in common: hook, topic, length, format.
- Plan next week’s content around that answer.
What to ignore
Daily fluctuations of a few percent, and comparisons with accounts of a very different size. Look at weekly trends instead. For definitions of reach, views and impressions, see our explainer.
