Is buying followers legal in India?
Published 3 October 2026 · 2 min read
We are not lawyers, and this is not legal advice. In general terms, there is no Indian law that makes buying followers or likes a crime by itself. The practical and legal picture has a few layers, though, and it helps to separate them.
Where the rules actually come from
The restrictions most people run into come from the platforms’ own terms of service, which prohibit artificial engagement. Breaking them can lead to action on your account, such as removed followers, restricted reach or in rare cases suspension. That is a contract matter between you and the platform, not a criminal one.
Where legal trouble can arise
- Misleading advertisers or customers. Passing bought numbers off as genuine reach to win a paid contract can be treated as misleading under consumer-protection and advertising rules.
- Fake reviews. Posting fake reviews to mislead consumers is the area where Indian regulators have been most active.
- Impersonation or fraud. Using any service to impersonate someone or to scam people is plainly illegal.
Influencer disclosure rules
India has guidelines for influencers on disclosing paid partnerships. They concern disclosure of promotions, not follower counts, but misrepresenting your reach to a brand to win a contract can lead to commercial disputes and loss of reputation.
Payments and taxes
If you resell services or earn from your account, normal rules for business income and GST thresholds apply. If you are only buying services for your own page, there is nothing special to file for the purchase itself.
Practical advice
- Be honest with partners about your audience and engagement.
- Never post fake reviews.
- Read the platform’s terms and understand the risk.
- Keep the numbers proportionate to real activity.
- If a specific business use worries you, ask a qualified advisor.

Can I be fined for buying followers?
We are not aware of any Indian law that fines buyers for purchasing followers as such. Misleading customers or advertisers is a separate matter. This is general information, not legal advice.
