YouTube watch time explained: what counts and what does not
Published 20 September 2026 · 1 min read
Watch time is the total minutes people spend watching your videos. It is the number YouTube cares about most when deciding what to recommend, and a requirement for monetisation. Many creators confuse it with views.
Watch time versus views
A view is one play. Watch time is the total duration across all plays. Ten thousand views of a ten-second video is far less watch time than a thousand views of a ten-minute one. That is why long, engaging videos grow watch hours faster.
What counts toward monetisation
- Public videos on your channel.
- Watch time from the last 12 months.
- Live streams that remain public after the broadcast.
Private, unlisted and deleted video time is not counted, and neither is time from videos you removed.
Watch time, average view duration and retention
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Watch time | Total minutes watched |
| Average view duration | How long a typical viewer stays |
| Audience retention | Which parts of a video people watch or skip |
How to increase it
- Make longer videos that keep their promise.
- Use playlists so one video leads to the next.
- Use end screens that point to the next video.
- Strong hooks and tight editing.
- Turn on auto-play suggestions with a pinned comment.
Services that mention watch hours
Our YouTube watch time services are listed with their video-length requirements. Be aware that only genuine viewing from real viewers builds a lasting channel, and monetisation review looks at more than the number.
