How to choose a YouTube channel name that is easy to remember
Published 29 September 2026 · 1 min read
A good channel name is short, easy to spell and easy to say aloud when you mention it in a video. It is also very hard to change later without losing recognition, so it is worth thirty minutes of thought.
Rules of thumb
- Aim for under 15 characters if possible.
- Avoid underscores and random numbers.
- Check the same handle on Instagram, X and Telegram before you commit.
- Say it out loud to a friend. If they ask “how do you spell that?”, change it.
- Avoid names that sound like existing big channels.
Descriptive versus brandable
| Type | Example | Pros and cons |
|---|---|---|
| Descriptive | Budget Tech India | Tells people what to expect; easy to search; harder to own |
| Brandable | Zorro Tech | Easy to own and remember; needs explaining |
| Personal | Rahul Sharma | Flexible if topics change; hard to search |
Check availability
- Search YouTube for the name and similar spellings.
- Check that the @handle is free.
- Check Instagram, X and Telegram.
- Search the name on Google to avoid clashes.
Do not rename often
Every rename resets recognition and breaks links people remember. Pick well once, and let the channel’s content define the brand.
