Do YouTube likes and comments matter for ranking?
Published 1 October 2026 · 1 min read
YouTube’s main ranking signals are click-through rate and watch time. Likes and comments are secondary, but they matter in two ways: for the algorithm, and for the humans deciding whether to watch.
For the algorithm
Likes and comments show that viewers reacted, which supports a video that is already getting watched. They do not rescue a video with weak retention, but they add to the case for recommending one that is performing.
For people
A video with a healthy like count looks worth watching. A video with zero likes on thousands of views looks odd, and visitors may leave. Comments add life: a few real comments make a page feel active.
Earn real engagement
- Ask a specific question in the video and in the pinned comment.
- Reply to the first comments quickly.
- Ask for likes only after you have given value.

What a healthy ratio looks like
| Views | Typical likes |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | 20 to 60 |
| 10,000 | 300 to 800 |
| 100,000 | 3,000 to 8,000 |
These are rough ranges; entertainment tends to be higher, tutorials lower.
Number boosts
Some creators add likes to key videos so the ratio looks natural; see the options, and keep the number proportionate to your views.
