How many views should your Instagram reel get? What is normal in India

Published 21 September 2026 · 2 min read

“Is my reel doing badly?” is the most common question new creators ask. The honest answer depends on your follower count, your niche and what you compare against. Here is how to judge your reels without panicking over one weak post.

Views are not the same as followers

Instagram shows each reel first to a small test audience, usually a slice of your followers plus a few others. If those people watch to the end, replay and share, Instagram shows it to more. So a page with 500 followers can get 20,000 views on one reel and 300 on the next. Wild variation is normal, especially on small accounts.

A rough way to judge your reels

Take your last ten reels and average the views. Divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. You can do this with our reel reach ratio calculator.

Average views ÷ followersWhat it usually means
Under 20%Reels are mostly seen by a slice of your own audience
20% to 100%Typical range for steady accounts
Over 100%Reels are reaching people who do not follow you, which is the goal

Why a reel gets stuck at a few hundred views

  • The first two seconds do not hold attention, so viewers swipe away.
  • The reel is longer than what it has to say.
  • There is no on-screen text, so silent viewers scroll on.
  • The topic is unclear, so Instagram does not know who to show it to.
  • The audio or visuals carry another app’s watermark, which can limit distribution.

What to do with the data

Open Insights on your best and worst reels from the last month. Compare the watch time and the share of non-followers. Make three new reels using the structure of the best one, and change only one variable at a time: the hook, the length or the topic.

Can a view boost help?

A reel with a few thousand views looks more worth watching than one with fifty, and many creators add views to new reels for that reason. It does not fix a weak reel; it only changes how the number looks. If you want to try, see the options on our Instagram views page, and keep the quantity in line with what your audience could plausibly deliver.

Instagram does not show every post to every follower. If average views are well below your follower count, work on hooks and retention.

How long should I wait before judging a reel?

Give it at least 48 hours. Some reels pick up late.
