Instagram likes vs followers: which should you build first?

Published 25 September 2026 · 1 min read

New creators often ask whether to grow followers or likes first. They do different jobs, and getting the order right makes the whole page look more natural.

Followers do the first-impression job

When a stranger lands on your profile, the follower count is the first number they read. It answers “is this page real?”. Without a base, even good content struggles to get a second look, because visitors leave before they reach it.

Likes do the proof-of-value job

Once someone is reading a post, likes answer “did other people think this was worth it?”. A post with six likes on a page with 4,000 followers looks odd; so does a post with 4,000 likes on a page with 80 followers.

A sensible order

  1. Publish first. Post at least nine pieces of content so there is something to judge.
  2. Build a modest follower base. Hundreds to a couple of thousand is enough to stop looking brand new.
  3. Raise likes on your best posts so they look in line with your audience size.
  4. Then focus on views, saves and comments, which matter more for reach.

Keep the ratio believable

A common healthy range is likes at several percent of followers. If followers are 10,000 and posts get 20 likes, the page looks hollow no matter what. If you ever add numbers, add them in proportion: a thousand followers might support 40 to 100 likes on a good post.

Which one converts customers?

For businesses, likes and comments on product posts matter most because they show people buying and talking. For creators seeking brand deals, engagement rate matters more than any single count.
