Telegram channel vs group: which should you create?
Published 25 September 2026 · 1 min read
Both are useful on Telegram, but they do different jobs. Choosing the wrong one makes growth harder, so decide based on whether you want to broadcast or to converse.
| Channel | Group | |
|---|---|---|
| Who posts | Admins only | Everyone, if allowed |
| Best for | Broadcasts, updates, deals, notes | Discussion, support, community |
| Member visibility | Members cannot see each other | Members can see each other |
| Size | Very large audiences | Large, but needs moderation |
| Views | Each post shows a view count | No view counts |
Choose a channel when
- You are sharing updates, deals, news or study material.
- You want views to show on posts.
- You do not want members to talk to each other.
Choose a group when
- You want a community that chats.
- You need support or Q&A.
- You are building trust through conversation.
The common combination
Run a channel for posts and link a discussion group. Posts appear in the group so people can comment, and you keep the clean broadcast feed. Many Indian exam, trading and deal channels use this setup.
Moderation
Groups need rules, admins and anti-spam bots. Decide who will moderate before you invite hundreds of people.
