Two-factor authentication: meaning and how it works

Published 1 October 2026

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a second step, such as a code, needed to log in.

Turn it on for every social account to protect it from takeover.

How it works in practice

2FA stops most takeovers even if your password leaks. Prefer an authenticator app to SMS where possible.

Example

Example: a stolen password is useless without the code from your phone.
