CPM: meaning and how it works

Published 1 October 2026

CPM is the amount advertisers pay per thousand ad views, and the basis for ad earnings.

Indian CPMs are generally lower than US or UK CPMs. They vary by niche: finance and tech pay more than entertainment.

How it works in practice

CPM varies by country, season, audience and topic. Advertisers pay more to reach valuable audiences, so finance and tech videos usually have higher CPMs than entertainment.

Example

Example: if the CPM is ₹100, 10,000 monetised ad views mean advertisers paid ₹1,000 before YouTube’s share.
