UTR / UPI reference number: meaning and how it works

Published 1 October 2026

A UTR or UPI reference number is the unique transaction ID your bank gives each UPI payment.

If a payment is deducted but not credited, send this number to support. You find it in your UPI app’s payment details.

How it works in practice

A UTR is usually a 12-digit number. It identifies the payment across banks and is the best proof if a credit is missing.

Example

Example: you send support the screenshot and the 12-digit reference to resolve a delayed top-up.
