Referrer: meaning and how it works

Published 1 October 2026

A referrer is the website or app a visitor came from before landing on your page.

Traffic services let you choose a referrer such as Google or Facebook for analytics testing.

How it works in practice

Referrers appear in analytics as sources. Test referrers help you check that tracking works.

Example

Example: analytics shows 1,000 visits from “google.com / organic” after a test.
